Is an underwater camera like an Aqua-Vu a necessary part of a fisherman’s equipment, or is it an expensive gadget? Before I purchased my Aqua-Vu I was slightly apprehensive, but after having some of my best ice fishing experiences ever because of it, I am a firm believer in the Aqua-Vu, especially on new bodies of water, or large bodies of water.
The first time the Aqua-Vu caught me more fish was while ice fishing for jumbo perch and walleye on Lake Winnibigosh in Minnesota. Every fisherman likes to get away from the crowd once in a while, so I went a quarter mile from the town of ice fishing shacks, and started drilling holes. I drilled 15 holes spread out over an area and readied my Aqua-Vu.
The first two holes showed me no jumbo perch or walleye, but the third hole was hopping with jumbo perch swimming all around at various depths. Quickly pulling up the camera, I began fishing with my jig and half a minnow combo. We all caught our limits for the day in that general area, and had a splendid evening cleaning fish back at the cabin and a huge fish fry.
The second day we had to drill different holes, and finally found the fish on the 10th one with the Aqua-Vu. We repeated the success of the previous day, and ate perch till our bellies were full that night.
I’m sure we would have caught fish without the Aqua-Vu, but no doubt, on Lake Winnebigosh because of it’s size, the Aqua-Vu allowed us to find the fish quicker so as to spend more time reeling them in… and ultimately frying them up!
