Business Tips from the Mongols

The Mongols gained a reputation for many things, some true, some not so true.  Their unquestioned success can be traced directly to Genghis Khan and his leadership qualities.  This article will focus on the man responsible for creating the largest land empire the world has ever known and how his successes can be translated into the modern business world.

Micromanaging a business no matter how big or small can have a suffocating effect of productivity, ingenuity and overall moral.  We have all been there, or seen examples of business leaders who would not know a good idea if it hit them in the face.

What Genghis did was create a universal set of laws that was to be followed from the top down to the bottom of a society.   Within this system he created a meritocracy where birth meant very little, what a man did and could do meant everything.

With laws and mobility in place he delegated responsibility to generals based upon their skills, setting them up for success.  Genghis Khan knew the strengths and weakness of his generals, their styles and tendencies.  After making decisions of who would do what where, he knew what he was getting and did not have to micromanage.

Businesses can learn a lot from Genghis Khan… bank on the strengths of employees, set them up for success by delegating properly and avoid the  black hole of micromanaging by initially placing leaders in the proper positions to guarantee success.
