Top 5 Online Fishing Resources

The internet has changed the way people find information.  Using the internet to improve your fishing will make you a better, more informed fisherman.  This article will describe the top five online fishing resources to help you fill the livewell.

Forums

Using forums gives you the opportunity to read about strategies for given lakes where the fish are biting and see pictures of what people are catching.  You can simply read, or you can participate in the community and create better fishing information for everyone.  One great place to find fishing forums for many lakes and states is lake-link.com

Online Fishing Articles

There are many articles about improving your fishing strategies available online.  You can find these by Googling the lake you are fishing along with the species of fish you are targeting.  While you will not find specific articles about every lake you research, by knowing the characteristics of the lake you want to fish, you can apply similar strategies you found about similar lakes for success.  (put in lessons from Red Lake link here).  I live on a dark water flowage and can find fish on any like body of water in any state.

YouTube Videos

If you have never watched fishing videos on Youtube, give it a shot.  You can find traditional fishing style shows, short videos of big fish, and tutorials on just about any topic you can think of related to fishing.  I especially like the underwater camera shots of ice fishing that show you how fish react and bite.  So when you have a few extra minutes, research your favorite fish… watch and learn.

State DNR Websites

On your local state DNR website you can find fishing reports along with the ever important changing bag limit rules.  It is always a good idea to read for a while before you head out fishing for the first time.  Another benefit I have found useful, is the free lake maps that are valuable when heading to a new lake or rethinking your fishing strategies on your favorite lake.  You can often times find maps here for free that you would have to pay money for at a store.

Google Earth

Just like Youtube fishing videos, you can get lost for a while when you are exploring some fishing spots using Google Earth.  You can find some secret fishing spots on public land that could produce for years to come.  A great strategy that I use Google Earth for is locating some backwater sloughs on rivers for some great early season fishing.  Early season fishing focuses on finding the warmest water and the bird’s eye view Google Earth gives you can help find where the warmest water will be for your next early season fishing adventure.  Many bodies of water have a marsh that drains into the main body of water that can not be seen from water level.  Find this source of warm water and catch more fish using Google Earth.

Using online fishing resources to improve your fishing is an inexpensive way to improve you fishing success.  You can pick and choose what online fishing resources you need to make your next catch a memorable one.  Good luck fishing.
