You ask any walleye fisherman what bait they have caught the most walleyes on and they will tell you a jig.  When I head out fishing on the Chippewa River where I live in the spring, summer, and fall I always have my favorite green jig heads with.  I do troll, cast, and use slip bobbers and have great catch plenty of walleye, but the walleye fishing technique that puts the most walleye in my boat is using a jig.
 

In the spring of the year walleye are stacked near current and structure.  This is the best of both worlds for the walleye, as they have suitable spawning grounds and they don't have to move to far to find food.  With proper boat positioning or from spot on the bank you can catch a whole mess of spring walleye.  I fish the same spring spots every year and every year I catch fish.  When you drive by a dam or another spot on a river that has the right habitat, people are in the same spots year after year.  Using a walleye jig allows you to get down to where the fish are.  Fishing from my boat on the Chippewa River I find my best success vertical jigging the inside channel edge(link fishing the inside channel).  If you have the luxary of fishing from a boat, vertical jigging allows you to have constant contact with the bottom and that is where the walleyes are.  If you are shore fishing you still can catch a lot of fish too, but you can also lose a lot of jigs, it's a good thing they are an economical walleye bait.

As the spring turns to summer, the spring walleye fishing spots lose their luster.  A lot of walleye fisherman forget about using the jig as the summer heats up.  Doing this is a mistake.  Some of my best days fishing the Chippewa River and other dark water flowages have come on days in the summer when the temperature hits the 90 degree mark. During the fall of the year as the water cools and the weeds start dying off, walleyes slowly go back to where they were in the spring.  Often times fisherman are turning to hunting or football, but if you can't wait until the winter ends to catch some more walleye jigging, fish the same spots you turn to every spring. 

Plain and simple, jigging for walleyes is a great producer, not only in the spring of the year, but also the summer and fall.  so when you want to get a bucket of minnows or put on a twister tail, like so many walleye fisherman do, you know that you have the bait of choice for catching a mess of walleyes.
