Top Western Wisconsin Walleye Waters

Western Wisconsin is home to some great walleye waters which will give you some high numbers to fill the live well, as well as a chance for a trophy.

Lake Wissota

If you looking for some great action fishing wisconsin walleyes, look no further than Lake Wissota located in Chippewa County.  This dark water flowage, including the Chippewa and Yellow Rivers, is home to numbers and solid sizes of walleye.  Look for walleye around the Chippewa and Yellow River main channels early in the spring and as summer approaches, the walleyes head for the weeds.  Jigging, using slip bobbers on cribs, and trolling produce for many anglers on Lake Wissota.  When the bite is on from spring through early summer, it is hard not to catch fish.  The best time to target Wissota walleyes is early in the year; when the pleasure boaters start up, fish the morning hours or a Monday or Tuesday during the week.

Dells Pond

Having grown up fishing Lake Wissota and now living on Dells Pond, I can tell you that these bodies of water fish very similar to each other.  If you fish Lake Wissota, you can take the same strategies that work well for you there, and apply them to Dells Pond.  The same strategies apply, although because of more current, it is a tad more difficult to anchor and fish with slip bobbers like you can do on Lake Wissota.  Trolling and jigging produce a lot of fish for those who give Dells Pond a shot.  You should fish Dells Pond early in the season or in the early morning hours as there are pleasure boaters who enjoy what this Chippewa River flowage has to offer.  Be advised that when trolling on Dells Pond for Walleyes, you should consider using fireline(put fishing with fireline article link here) as there are many northern and musky in the waters.

Lake Altoona

Lake Altoona is a flowage of the Eau Claire River.  It is a dark body of water like Lake Wissota and Dells Pond.  There are a lot of fish in this lake as you can tell if you have ever seen the amount of people ice fishing it.  The reason Lake Altoona is a local favorite is because it is home to big fish of all species.  Lake Altoona is one of the better Wisconsin Walleye waters around.

Early in the season there is no better lake to do some long line trolling with a Rapala than Lake Altoona.  The upper  part of the lake and the huge mid lake hump are a great place to hook into a trophy wisconsin walleye.  Lake Altoona is a popular destination for pleasure boaters and should be fished early in the season, in the morning, or at night.  If you are looking for fish over 20 inches consider fishing Lake Altoona. Tip: Locate the inside channel and find the hidden walleyes . . . read more

Western Wisconsin is home to many lakes, but Lake Wissota, Dells Pond, and Lake Altoona offer fisherman who live in the Chippewa Valley an opportunity to catch numbers, solid sizes, and also the opportunity for wisconsin walleyes.  Do not over look these bodies of water, especially in the early season as they warm up quicker because of their stained colors; and if you decide to fish all season be aware of when pleasure boat traffic will be high.  Good luck going after some wisconsin walleyes in the Chippewa Valley.
