Secret Tips for Summer Wisconsin Walleye Fishing

After Wisconsin walleyes leave their predictable spring locations to search for food, many anglers continue to fish these spots picking up a few walleyes.  What weather patterns should you look for to follow the Wisconsin walleyes as they prowl to satisfy their appetites, and how can you find the active fish?

No doubt you can still catch fish in spring locations most of the season, but if you time it just right, you can find large schools of walleye biting like crazy.  The simple sign I look for is the temperature hitting the upper eighties, then I head for the shallowest water I can find.  If you are faced with a large area, the way to narrow down your search area is to fish where the most weeds and/or fallen timber is.

Now how do you fish for the walleye that are swimming in these waters?  From my experience you can catch fish by anchoring; and it is best is to pretend you are flipping the shoreline for bass.  Having a trolling motor is a must along with a ¼ jig head tipped with a minnow.  Stay out from shore far enough so you can underhand flip your bait to the weed edge, or next to fallen timber.

You should be targeting 4-10 feet of water using this approach.  If you can find all the above ingredients on a wind blown shore, you are sure to find a walleye feeding frenzy.  I have said to myself many times after slaying the walleyes using this strategy “this is just like Canada”.

Recognizing that the warm weather pattern is approaching can successfully help you catch Wisconsin walleyes for a few weeks to months, depending on how hot the summer gets.

Do not be the fisherman who fishes the same spots all year long; expand your horizons. Remember, when it first gets hot, go shallow for some great Wisconsin walleye fishing.
