How to Catch the Next World Record Musky

Is there a big one out there that could be the next world record musky and what is the window of opportunity and best method to catch him? Having fished on the Chippewa Flowage, Lake  Holcombe, Lake  Wissota, and Dells Pond I will offer my past experiences which include my own stories and those of experienced musky fisherman in their quest for the next world record musky.

Chippewa Flowage

There have a couple big jaw bones found on the Chippewa Flowage that came from a fish 58-70 inches long that would have gave it the potential to have been the next world record musky.  I have fished the flowage with a friend of mine who is an old time guide and I have flipped through his stack of pictures with some very impressive fish.  He has boated fish over 50 inches and knows the Chippewa Flowage has big fish waiting to be caught.

Lake Wissota

Lake Wissota is part of Chippewa River system and recent shocking has produced fish up to the mid 50 inch size.  I have fished Lake Wissota my whole life and have had a 3 pound bass bit in half by a musky.  I have also caught a 30 inch northern with teeth marks that were from a huge fish; also most likely from a musky.  Lake Wissota must be fished early in the morning and late in the season because of the recreational traffic on the nice summer days.  There are many people who musky fish Lake Wissota looking for the next world record musky.  Lake Wissota is a local favorite that keeps people coming back with many great areas to target this great fish.

Dells Pond

Dells Pond is also part of Chippewa River system and is a much smaller body of water compared to the Chippewa Flowage or Lake Wissota.  When I asked the old timer where was the biggest musky you have ever seen?, he said “Dells Pond”.  I live above Dells Pond on the Chippewa River and often fish this body of water.  There have been 50+ inch muskies caught here, and the potential for even bigger ones exist.  Just like any body of water in the Chippewa River system, Dells pond has good structure and forage base for the next world record musky.

When is the window of opportunity for the next world record musky?

I fish a lot for all different types of fish and am on the water most days from early spring through late fall and had an interesting experience in late August on Dells Pond.  There are a ton of walleyes on Dells Pond and I very seldom have trouble catching them; but on this late August day I was catching a few walleyes where I usually catch many more.

We hooked into some big fish while jigging, but they wouldn’t take the big baits I was throwing at them, when I realized what was happening… the walleyes hadn’t transitioned to deeper water, they were swimming for their lives to avoid being the dinner to a musky.

I have caught some respectable musky on Dells Pond, but the amount of big fish biting makes me believe that the window of opportunity for the next world record is in late August in a mild summer and early September in a hot summer.

What method will boat the next world record musky?

The method I believe will work is a heavy rod with a big jig and trailer hook tipped with a sucker minnow as if you were fishing for walleye because muskies in these systems feed on forage near the bottom.  I will continue the quest for the next world record musky with this strategy in the two week window of opportunity.  Good luck in your quest.
